 Precision Engineering Manpower Initiative

Overview

To upgrade Singapore’s capabilities and capacity in the Precision Engineering (PE) industry, SPRING Singapore, the Economic Development Board (EDB) and the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) have launched a S$76 million PE Manpower Initiative to train 2,000 professionals in the PE workforce over a period of five years.

The PE Manpower Initiative consists of two programmes that will equip the PE workforce with advanced manufacturing capabilities to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

National PE Scholarship Programme

The National PE Scholarship Programme enables GCE ‘O’ Level and ITE engineering graduates to pursue a diploma course in Precision Engineering with the following benefits :

  • Full sponsorship of course fees
  • Stipend @ S$800/mth during course
  • Opportunity to undergo Industrial Attachment in countries like Germany & Japan

Candidates can apply for the following courses :

a) Nanyang Polytechnic Diploma in Digital and Precision Engineering

A three-year full-time diploma course which provides :

  • A strong foundation in PE fundamentals, digital design and manufacturing;
  • Knowledge and skills in digital design and engineering applications, engineering process and control;
  • Industry exposure through six months of industrial attachment to a local or overseas company. Top performing students in each cohort will be given opportunities to take part in fully-funded overseas industrial attachments in countries with strong PE capabilities such as Germany and Japan.

To date, there are a total of 360 scholars (from NYP and ITE) under the Scholarship Programme.

b) ITE Technical Engineer Diploma in Machine Design

A collaborative effort between ITE and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEYS), Baden Wüerttemberg, Germany, the Technical Engineer Diploma is a new progression path for ITE graduates who possess Nitec or Higher Nitec in related fields. The Technical Engineer Diploma course comprises two years of institutional training and 1.5 years of industrial attachment.

The course curriculum is modeled along that of the ‘Staatlich Geprufter Technicker’ (or State Certified Technical Engineer) course conducted by Gottlieb-Daimler Schule, an institution in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The certification will be issued by MEYS and will be similar to the one given out in Germany. Graduates of this Technical Engineer Diploma course can be considered for admission into the Universities of Applied Sciences in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

National PE Specialist Programme

The National PE Specialist Programme is a structured, in-employment upgrading programme co-developed with the industry to provide career enhancement for ITE engineering graduates and current PE technicians through a part-time diploma course in PE and on-the-job training.

The terms of the programme are as follows :
  • Training allowances of up to S$20,000
  • Full sponsorship for upgrading courses in the local polytechnics
To date, there are a total of 56 companies and 182 positions applied under the Specialist Programme.
