The best kept secret of Singapore's textile and apparel industry is now out - with the launch of the first ever industry brand. Apparel Singapore is a collective label that reflects a strategic and unique global marketing collaboration by a group of leading Singapore apparel manufacturers. This global business-to-business brand initiative is managed by the Textile and Fashion Federation (TAFf) with support from SPRING Singapore and International Enterprise (IE) Singapore.
About 9,000 people work in Singapore's apparel industry - in 128 manufacturing companies, 582 fashion boutiques and 92 international buying houses. Our 128 manufacturers chalked up a combined manufacturing output of $6 billion in 2007. This is about 2% of the global apparel industry. TAFf aims to grow Singapores share of the global apparel manufacturing business by 15% in five years' time.
"Apparel Singapore is a joint effort by the government and industry to help Singapore-based apparel manufacturers expand their international customer base and strengthen business relationships with buyers," said Trade and Industry Minister Mr Lim Hng Kiang at the 16 July launch.
"This collective brand identity embodies our value offerings as trusted business partners - highly reliable, reputable, customer-focused and adaptable with integrated service offerings," Mr Lim added.
Nine established Singapore clothing manufacturers, who own and manage multiple production locations in 20 countries across the region, will help to position Apparel Singapore to the world. For starters, the nine Apparel Singapore ambassadors will soon go on marketing road shows in the US, Europe and Japan - in search of business opportunities for TaFf and talent for the industry.
Macy's is just one of the many top US department stores which has been buying from Singapore manufacturers for years.
"At Macy's we are glad that we've been able to rely on our Singapore partners throughout the buying process - from design concept to product development and distribution," said Ms Elaine Pang, General Manager, Macy's Merchandising Group (Singapore branch). "I think what buyers also look for are customized services and uncompromising quality. The manufacturers we work with have manufacturing bases with good geographical spread. That truly cuts our worries about getting fast support and minimizing our trade barrier risks."

The launch of Apparel Singapore is expected to boost our already longstanding and successful Singapore apparel industry by promoting the manufacturing services, competitiveness, capabilities and offerings of our apparel manufacturers.
Singapore has several advantages, said Mr Chris Koh, TaFf Secretary-General, because we are
Reputable With "a solid industry track record of over 40 years, trusted business partners and established clientele base," he said.
Integrated We provide total outsourcing supply chain capabilities from design to manufacturing. Singapore manufacturers also own multiple manufacturing bases, pointed out Mr Patrick Lee, Executive Chairman and Managing Director of SL Global, and Apparel Singapore ambassador. "Our geographical advantage makes us a convenient gateway between the East and West," Mr Lee added. "It's easier for us to crack the cultural differences when opening factories in say, China and India."
Customer-focused We consistently meet requirements, understand customers' needs and deliver best results. Singapore is consistently recognized by buyers for product quality, on-time delivery and social compliance.
Adaptable We have the scale and talents to deliver efficient solutions, and quick response to changes in fashion with market proximity. Multiple bases can support buyers' diversification needs.
Responsible We provide safe working conditions, fair policies and salaries with ethical workplace standards and we do not take any risks that our customers would not.
Macy's Ms Pang sums up Singapore's edge best. "I think Apparel Singapore will be a great showcase of the collective strengths of Singapore's apparel industry. This country has a stable political environment, great infrastructure, connectivity, skilled workforce, strategic geographic location and a pro-business environment. All this will give Apparel Singapore an edge to offer tremendous advantages to global buyers." ET
